Common ABS (ESP) Fault – Brake Pressure Sender / Sensor Switch Failure – Audi / Mazda / Mitsubishi / Seat / Skoda & Volkswagen

The Famous Brake Pressure Sensor ABS Fault

VW, Seat, Skoda and Audi Brake Pressure Sensor Switch ABS Fault The ABS Pump control module is a very common fault for owners of VW’s, Audi’s, Skoda’s & Seat’s but also all other makes including Mazda, Mitsubishi, Honda and BMW. All suffer with the common ESP system fault. The fault is detected by having the ESP light illuminated on the Dashboard Speedo and also the “ESP OFF” switch will be illuminated too. Pressing the “ESP OFF” switch will have no effect. If you’ve had this problem, you would have most likely taken the vehicle to your local garage where they’d plug it onto a diagnostics machine and find the following common fault code: “01435 Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)” or it would have given you the following fault description: Brake Pressure Sensor or Brake Pressure Sender.

If you had your vehicle in with the main dealers then you would have been told that you need to replace the ABS Pump Control Module. In fact, almost any garage you go to will tell you the same thing. A replacement ABS unit for your vehicle would be in the regions of £1000 – £1500 (+Vat) and that’s not including Labour. Luckily for you, we can repair these units for a fraction of the cost and could potentially save you a lot of money. What’s more, we now offer a full LIFETIME warranty on the replacement / remanufactured parts giving you complete peace of mind.

What is ESP & Why Do I Need It?

Exchange Units Kept In Stock The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is an additional function to the commonly known ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) & TCS (Traction Control System). Many 2000+ VW’s, Audi’s, Skoda’s & Seat’s are fitted with the ESP system. ABS prevents the wheels locking up under harsh braking / emergency braking, TCS will prevent the wheels from spinning when accelerating hard. ESP is much more advanced and is constantly working, calculating every corner you take to ensure you’re safety. The ESP system will use accelerometer sensors around the vehicle, to detect when the vehicle is likely to loose traction whilst cornering or sudden turning to avoid a collision at speed. If there is excessive longitudinal or lateral acceleration/deceleration it will be detected & by sudden steering at speed, the ESP system will instantly apply the brake to one of the opposing wheels, preventing excessive lateral movement that causes loss of traction to the road and loss of driver control of the vehicle.

Why You Should Choose Sinspeed To Replace / Remanufacture Your ABS unit

The ABS pump will have failed due to a manufacturing defect and replacing it with a new unit or even a second hand one does not necessarily prevent this from happening again. In fact, if you was to replace it with a working second hand unit, then you will be waiting for the day for it to fail because they are all failing at one point or another. The problem is with the Internal Brake Pressure Sender Sensor Switch. Once this fails, the ESP system is no longer working. There are other companies that will simply replace this part and return it to you, but that will not prevent it from happening again in the future.

What we do is completely different. We bypass the original Brake Pressure Sensor Switch and fit our very own custom manufactured External Brake Pressure Sender Switch and calibrate it so that the manufacturing defect is no longer existing. This is the only way to completely remove all risks of the unit failing again and this is why we are confident enough to offer a full LIFETIME warranty on the unit.

Why Modify The Unit? – Why Not Just Replace The Damaged Part?

All other cars without the MK60 ATE ABS Control Module have the Brake Pressure Sensor fitted externally to the ABS Pump and guess what, they never fail!

Having the Brake Pressure Sender Sensor Switch fitted internally to the ABS Pump is a new space-saving idea which has gone terribly wrong and unfortunately dealerships are yet to recover from this outbreak of faulty units as they have not yet released a modification. Replacing the internal switch for another one will not permanently cure the problem as it will remain a manufacturing defective unit. In order to safe-guard the future of your ABS unit, you have to modify it to match it’s predecessors. All the older versions of the ABS units come without internal brake pressure switches and the ESP never failed because the switches were mounted externally. If something isn’t broken.. why try to fix it? The external switches were great and never failed, the internal brake pressure switch was a bad idea from the start.

SAFETY WARNING!!
There have been rumours of people and/or companies trying to repair these units and in some cases imitate our work. Please understand that although the ESP system is not absolutely crucial, modifying the ABS controller/pump in any way (without superior extensive knowledge) in the technology of advanced braking systems and electronic control modules, you will be risking the life of others. Please do not attempt to repair these units yourself and please do not offer such services to trade or the general public. We have been in business since 1972 as a group company and all our parts, services are fully tested before leaving the workshop. All units are thoroughly tested on specific specialist equipment to ensure maximum quality. Our ESP Fault Modifications come fully approved and as far as we’re aware, there is no other company out there that can successfully repair these units and completely remove the defective state.

If you’ve got a car with a Brake Pressure Sensor fault relating to the ABS unit or have the ESP light lit up on your dash, then call us today and we’ll give you an instant quote. The number to call is 0871 2887 666.

    • Hi Robert,

We have a few on the shelf for that vehicle and we also offer own unit repair services. For a quote, please call us on 0871 2887 666 or alternatively click here to email us. Please note, we will need your ABS unit’s corresponding part numbers so please have this to hand.

      Thanks,

  • I have a 2006 Seat Altea 2.0 Reference Sport (mileage approx 30,000 miles) where the ABS light has recently come on and stayed on and a recent diagnostic check says that there is a brake sensor fault. I was very interested in reading the above and that you have found a way to bye pass the existing unit. Unfortunately I live in Spain and it would be impossible for me to bring the car back to the UK in the foreseeable future.

I understand that you like to fit these units yourself but are you able to supply the necessary part with fitting instructions and calibration figures to me to pass on to my mechanic? If you are, could you please let me know what costs are involved.

    Many thanks

    Clive Sutton

    • Hi Clive,

Certainly, we help customers all over the world with these common faults. We have units on the shelf for your vehicle & also offer an own unit repair service, however, in order to quote you I would require the corresponding part numbers from your unit. Please click here to email us your part numbers. We will supply full step by step re-calibration instructions which can be carried out using a VAGCOM system.

  • Hi there,

I'm from Brazil, own a 180hp 2002 Golf GTI and i have the red ESP light always on (an exclamation point inside a triangle and a circle).

Lately i've been trying fix it without success.

Right now my car is under regular maintenance so we can get everything fixed in order not to let anything else interfere on the sensor signals, then i can be sure if the fault is really on the sensor itself or if its related to ABS or something else.

As my car is at the Volkswagen authorized service, could you guys help me out how to figure what is probably causing the ESP light to be always on? Maybe if i get the VAG error codes, that will be any helpful?

Also, is the Passat ESP sensor the same as Golf GTI sensor?

Right now i have a Passat ESP sensor and will try it on my car to maybe get the problem solved..

Anyway, thank you guys in advance for the help!

    Feel free to e-mail me.

    • Hi Jack,

It's a very common fault and we're currently repairing at least 10-15 units a day with the same faults. The problem is inside the ABS control module but we'll need the whole unit with the hydraulic pump so that we can custom-remanufacture it with our very own custom fabricated external pressure switch. Please supply us with a part number from your unit (for VW golf the part number will start with 1KO) with this number we can tell you if we have one in stock and how much it will cost. If we don't have it in stock, we can remanufacture your own unit which takes 3-5 working days.

The Passat ESP unit will not work on your vehicle, unless the numbers are identical but will still have to be calibrated using a VAGCOM system of some sort.

  • I have a 2007 Honda S2000 and at 12500 kms the vsa (esp? ) warning lights came on.

The stability assist is definitely not working.although the ABS is fine. My Honda dealer tells me that the problem is the brake pressure sensor located with the ABS and though the failed part is small, its located within the ABS and the sensor will have to be replaced at a cost of approx 1500 euros. ( I live in Cyprus ) It appears that failure with these ATE parts is very common to the extent that I believe in the USA there was a safety recall for some Honda cars fitted with the parts. The part fitted to my car looks identical to the pictures on your website, and the part no is ATE 06.2102-0262.4 Would you be able to repair/replace this unit? ( assuming I,ve identified the correct part )

    Regards Don Buckland

    • Hi Don,

Certainly we can offer remanufactured units off the shelf and also, a service to repair your own unit, however, please can you respond with some more part numbers so we can identify the correct unit. That number you've given us does not match up to any on our records. It's certainly the right unit but we cannot always cross reference all numbers so please respond with all the part numbers you can see on the control module.

      • Hi Don,

Sorry for our late response. The ATE number you gave us is generally the number we go by. We can test & repair these units, we don't have any with that matching part number in stock at the moment but if you'd like a quote to have your own unit tested & repaired, please call us on 0871 2887 666 or drop us an email and someone will get back to you with a price.

          • Hi Don,

Please confirm the part numbers from your unit & the fault your having with the unit as well i.e. what lights are showing on the dash and has it been diagnosed on a machine?

If we're doing a supply & fit job, the ecu is fully reprogrammed (if required) and inclusive in all quotations.

  • Hi

I have an almost identical problem on my 2006 Seat Leon FR where the warning light is continually on, except that my ESP switch in the centre console is not illuminated and will not light up no matter how many times I press it.

A diagnostics check at a local garage returned no error (although i'm sceptical as to whether he knew what he was doing) and suggested maybe it was just the switch that was faulty (ie jammed).

Have you ever come across anything like that?

    Cheers & regards,

    Matt.

    • Hi Mathew,

That's exactly what happens on the Seat Leon's across the range with internal Brake Pressure Switches built into the ABS control module. We carry these units on the shelf now due to how common they've become. If you can supply us with a part number, we can quote you on a repair/replacement unit. Please email us your part numbers and a contact number and we'll call you right back with a quotation.

  • Hi Admin

But above you state that it returns fault code “01435 Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)” or it would have given you the following fault description: “Brake Pressure Sensor” or “Brake Pressure Sender”.

But my garage got none of these errors, so it's surely not the same problem?

Don't worry if you can't help, I just thought I would try my luck.

    Kind regards

    Matt.

    • Hi Mathew,

If the ESP light is illuminated on the dash, then there will be an error code for it – it is possible that the garage you used did not have the appropriate diagnostics equipment to read the code for the ABS system.

  • Hi my friend is looking at a passat to buy which has the abs and Eps lights on also display shows “stop brake failure” even the airbag light is on. Can all these pros be related to this pump module? other than that the car is good and if this module can be updated will be a good buy.
The car is a v reg 1.8 se VW Passat estate, petrol, manual.
How easy is this module to remove?

    Cheers Andy.

    • Hi Andy,

The ABS & ESP light are related to the abs module, however, have it scanned with a VAGCOM or equivelant diagnostics tool to bring up the fault codes and see what it tells you. Make a note of the faults and then erase the codes – if the lights go out and don’t come back after a short drive, then it’s possible it was a logged fault such as a wheel speed sensor which was replaced but the fault codes may not have been reset.

If the lights do not go out or come back on after a short drive, then you know there is a problem somewhere in the circuit. There’s not a lot that can go wrong in the ABS system but if it is the ABS module in this case, on this year of vehicle it will not be an expensive repair. For an instant quote, give us a call or an email as we don’t list prices on our website.

They’re very easy modules to remove with just a couple of mounting bolts, a big multi-plug and 6 brake lines. We always suggest disconnecting the battery terminals prior to removing any modules from the vehicle to avoid power surges and sparks.

I hope this helps & thanks for reading.

  • Hi,

The ABS / ESP fault lights came on on my 2005 Golf Plus 1.6 FSI a few months ago. As you have noted we were quoted over £1,200 to replace by my local garage. On being advised that this did not constitute an MOT failure we decided to live with it in the short term. Given that we may be able to reduce the cost of repairing this fault I would be grateful if you could give me a quote for the replacement part. Also I am in Glasgow. Would my local garage be able to fit the replacement part.

    Regards,

    Stuart

    • Hi Stuart,

Actually this type of ABS fault will not pass an MOT because the ABS warning light is lit on the dash. We can certainly remanufacture & modify the unit or even provide a unit off the shelf as a replacement to you at a fraction of the cost you were quoted. For more information and a quote, please call our offices on 0871 2887 666 or alternatively if you provide us with a contact telephone number, a member of our team will call you back.

  • Hi Guys,

I recently sent my car to my local mechanic who changed both front wheel bearings. After the change he reported that there was an ABS fault on the near side front wheel.

After spending some time trying to solve this hes come back saying that the ABS Module has failed.

The part that failed is an AUDI A2 ABS Pump (MK60 ATE)

I checked with AUDI and they want £1025 for a new module which only has a 2 year warranty.

My mechanic suggested contacting you guys as it seems that you can fix or replace the parts for much cheaper.

Could you get back to me and give me a quote for the part.

    Cheers

    Iain Blackwood

    • Hi Iain,

First check to make sure the near side front wheel sensor is not damaged. Knocking this sensor can cause damage easily as they are quite fragile, check the continuity of the wiring and if required, replace the sensor. This should cure the fault. Also, try to clear the fault code with a scanner and then road test the vehicle to ensure the light stays off. If it does come back on and all else checks out okay, then we can certainly look to repair or replace this unit for you. We carry the MK60 ATE units on the shelf in all part numbers and have recently had a massive price drop as well.

For a quote & more information, please send us an email or call us on 0871 2887 666 and an advisor will be happy to assist you.

      • Hi Guys,

The mechanic has done this, he has even replaced the sensor. Hes had over 2 weeks with my vehicle so I think that he has exausted all other avenues. Thisleads me to believe that this is the actual problem, I probably should have mentioned that the ESP warning light is on as well.

Also the mechanic says he looked inside the module and said one of the pins/points? (I wasnt really sure what he was talking about) is corroded.

Currently he has disabled the ABS and ESP system so that I can actually drive my vehicle as before he did this the breaks were extreamely stiff as the ABS was firing even at low speed and gentle breaking causing it to seem as if you werent really breaking.

        What do you think?

        Regards,

        Iain Blackwood

        • Hi Iain,

Okay I'd suggest removing the unit (complete) with the hydraulic pump and sending it to us for a "Test & Report" so that we can connect it up to our test rig and run the pump to see what faults it brings up. We will then inspect the unit for any physical defects as well and then contact you before going ahead with any repairs/modifications and quote you accordingly.

  • I have an Audi A3 special edition 07, and just made an appointment for Friday at my local audi garage where i bought the car 4 years ago. The ESP fault brake pressure is what the mechanic said, so im bracing myself for the news on friday. Thanks very much for the forum, it helps to understand what is going on with the ESP system, and it is confusing as to why there is a fault. Surely audi should repair it (good will) if this is a common problem.

Many thanks once again and hope to be in touch.
    Regards,
    Dean

    • Hi Dean,

It is a very common fault and most dealers will in good will offer to reduce the cost of a replacement ABS pump by up to 50% depending on the year of the vehicle and if it has been regularly serviced by the dealer. However, the units have not yet been corrected and so it will be a like for like pump being replaced meaning the fault will eventually come back.

What we offer is a modification to your original unit to ensure the manufacturing defect is correct to eliminate the fault so it doesn’t reoccur. This is all done during the repairs to ensure full functionality with complete peace of mind. We carry almost every part number readily available in stock so there isn’t any waiting around.

We offer collect & return services FREE depending on your location and a very affordable fitting service. Send us an email or call us on 0871 2887 666 to find out more.

  • Hello, my 2006 VW Golf Mk 5 has been diagnosed with the “01435 Brake Pressure Sensor (G201) Fault" as the ESP light is permanently on. I understand that VW now do a repair kit (1K0698517B). Can you tell me how this compares to getting the existing unit repaired as II'm not sure which option to go for?
    San

    • Hi San,

The repair kit cures the fault but the unit will remain with the same OE manufacturing defect. Repairing your own unit or even buying a replacement from us will ensure it is modified and fully guaranteed by us for two years. Also, our exchange units no longer require programming!

  • Hi, What a great forum, I have an 07 Seat Leon and for the last couple of days four warning lights appeared all at the same time while driving, 1st being the ESP light, 2nd was the brake fluid warning light which was flashing, 3rd was the ABS warning light and 4th was the brake pad wear indicator light, I've checked the fluid level, the pads and all is ok, the lights don't stay on all the time, I pulled up switched off the ignition then restarted after a few minutes and all light were off and stayed off for the remainder of the journey approx 5 miles, any ideas.

  • Hi __I have just bought a VW Pasasat 2003 tdi. having problem with braking. When i brake initiall ok but just before it stops it makes a grinding sound before coming to a halt. . Also the ABS light comes on after a while as i continue to drive. Had the brake pads changed resently to eliminate the problem. Can any one advise, what i need to get done or checked. Thanks

    • Hi Peter,

It sounds like it could be a hub assembly problem. Inside the hub when the bearing fails then the abs sensor ring can have play in it which would cause the ABS sensor on that hub to get incorrect readings and will cause DTC error codes to flag up in the ABS ECU causing the ABS light to come on. Have your local garage check your hubs and same time brake discs and speed sensors.

      Hope this helps.

  • I have a 2006 VW Touran and took it to main dealer last week for full service and to check why car was hard to start.
Main dealer could not diagnose fault but this week when the car has not started the ABS lights on dash and centre console were illuminated. After turning key to on / off several times ABS light went out and i can start car – will altering my ABS unit sort out my car starting problems?

    • Hi Sam,

There are several ECU's on a modern car and they all handshake with each other. On some cars, if a module is defective and not communicating correctly, it can cause starting issues. We can look into this fault for you, please call us on 0871 2887 666 or email us to discuss the costs involved. All our ABS repairs come with a full 2 year warranty.

      • Dear Sinspeed,
I'm over in Malaysia, and I own an MK5 09 model. The ESP light and the tyre pressure light are on simultaneously, while the ABS and the electro mechanical lights do come on intermittently. Is the problem I'm having probably due to faulty ABS sensors or the pump?
I hope you can reply me to my mail at melvyn_ong77@yahoo.com
        Thanks, so much.

        • Hi,

Could possibly be ABS pump or sensor fault but I would recommend having an auto electrician carry out a diagnostics on the vehicle and check the sensors before assuming to replace any parts. If the ABS pump is found to be at fault, we can definitely test the unit for you to confirm this and repair or replace it at very affordable costs.

  • Hi,
I have an Audi A2. 51 plate. I have errors in relation to the ABS sensor, but nothing about 'brake pressure sensor'. I have the ABS light little circle with arrow and yellow steering wheel in middle. Somtimes tI can go a couple of days without the errors.

    My errors are :
18057 powertrain data bus missing message from abs controller p1649 – intermittent.
65535 internel control module memory error. 00-00
00778 steering angle sensor (G85) 49-10 No communications – Intermittent.

    I'm seeing a control module part of 8Z0 907 379 B

Can you advise? this doesn't seem to match the other peoples errors on here?

    Regards

    • Hi Darren,

All these faults can relate back to an ABS control module failure. The best option would be to remove the ABS pump complete and have it tested intensively. For information on this, send us an email or call us on 0871 2887 666.

  • hi ,after recently removing my steering wheel to replace faulty indicator stalk, and then replacing it, i have noticed the esp light has appeared on the dash? before that it was off, but has come on was or twice which caused a lost of power, but was rectified by turning ignition off and re-starting it. any ideas would be gratefully received? thanks…

    • Hi,

This sounds like a steering angle sensor fault, not necessarily the sensor require replacing but either recalibrating or adjustment of the steering wheel to align it correctly with the splines on the shaft. I would recommend having the vehicle connected to VAGCOM or similar diagnostics depending on the vehicle to see what the steering angle sensor readings are when the steering wheel is straight.

  • Hi
I own a Audi a4 52plate 1.9tdi for about 2 weeks now ive been getting the ESP warning light come on my dashboard after driving for about 5-10mins.I plugged it in to a VAG 5053+ to see if there were any codes and it read
    8E0614517
    ABS/ESP
    front
    17260265950011
    bb
    code:04255

    any ideas?

    Thanks Andrew

    • Hi Andrew,

The 8E0 number is the part number of the unit and the 04255 code relates to the soft coding of the unit. There should be a fault code with fault description just below that information. Please copy & paste all information you see on your VAG 5053+ to us and we will try our best to help you. The long number starting with "17260.." doesn't correspond to anything, possibly a serial number of some sort. You'll be looking for fault codes generally starting with a P or a 5 digit code, for example see below:

18258 – Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ECU
      P1850 – 35-10 – – – Intermittent

Please check again and come back to us if you require any further help or information.

    • Hi Kuldeep,

Which dash lights are on and also, have you had the fault codes read from the OBDII point?
Wheel bearing slack could cause loss of signal or incorrect signal from one wheel which could possibly cause the juddering and ABS light to come on but shouldn't be all your dash lights on.. would need more information on this.

  • Hi, I have a VW 1.6 Golf Match Mk5 (56 plate) and the traction control light on the dash is constantly on. I am unable to turn it off using the ESP button. My mechanic did some tests in the VW garage and advised that I'll need to replace the control unit which will cost around £800 for the part.

I've just read the info above which was very usefull. What do you think the best way to fix this problem is?

  • Hi I have a golf mk4 v6 4motion on a w (2000) reg, my ESP button doesn’t light up when I press it and it doesn’t come up on my dash board, but I have the ABS light on on the dash also my 4 wheel drive isn’t working I’m guessing because the ESP button? help as I need to know if the car I have just bought is going to the scrap yard! Also the engine management light sometimes decides to come on when it feels like it?!

    • Hi Chelsea,

Firstly, apologies for the late response to this query, we have been overwhelmed with enquiries recently. Your vehicle wouldn't be affected by the internal braking pressure sensor problem, however, it does sound as though the ABS pump has a malfunction within. It could also be a wheel speed sensor fault, you'd need to get into a local workshop to have the fault codes read from the ABS and Engine ECU to help diagnose the root cause of the problem.

If there is an ABS fault, we can possibly remanufacture the ABS unit at a very cost-effective price and it will be returned with a lifetime warranty.

  • Hi, I think i may have the same issue, my ESP doesn't work, and the ESP OFF button is constantly illuminated with no effect when pressing it. The only difference is that i have no light illuminated on the dash. I have had a scan which has come back with the code described above. Cheers

    • Hi Dave,

A strange one, could be the bulb which is used to illuminate the ESP light on the dash could be damaged or previously removed if this was a known problem by a previous owner or garage for example. • Hi,
I have a 2005 VW Passat (UK) 1.9 TDI with 38k miles. There are three yellow lights on the dashboard which are lit:
1 – glow plug light (flashes),
2 – parking brake system fault,
    3 – electronic stabilisation programme.

I also get an engine fault and a parking brake fault message on the console when I start the car. My mechanic tells me the fault codes indicate a faulty brake pressure sensor in the ABS unit and that as a sensor repair kit isn’t available I will have to replace the complete ABS module – approx £1200 for a new unit…..

Does this sound correct and what do you advise are the options for replacing the ABS unit if he is correct?
    Thanks,
    Des

    • Hi Des

Well, most VW Passat’s have an external ‘Brake Pressure Sensor’ screwed in to the side of the ABS block, however, if you send your unit in to our workshop, we can remanufacture it at a fraction of the cost of replacing the unit – and no programming will be required. We also offer a fitting service as well.

For pricing, please call our offices on 0844 847 9999 or alternatively, if you send an email.. a member from our sales team will get right back to you.

  • Hi,

I have a 2008 golf mk5 1.9 bluemotion with 4 lights on my dashboard, abs, ESP and brake light and a constant loud beeping noise, I’m not sure if it has any thing to do with it but the 4th light is a yellow steering wheel? The car was involved in light front end damage and parked up for nearly a year, does that sound like an abs pump failure?

    Regards

    Patrick

    • Hi Patrick

      Thank you for your enquiry.

This sounds like a complete ABS pump failure. When the ABS pump loses communication with other modules, it will cause all three lights to appear on the dashboard and in some cases even the steering wheel light (yellow/red) because it is linked to the steering angle sensor. However, we recommend having the vehicle connected to a diagnostics system to confirm the faults. I believe we have the Golf Mk5 1.9TDi Bluemotion ABS pumps in stock if you do require one and we can offer the diagnostics & fitting services if needed.

For more information, please call our offices on 0844 847 9999 or alternatively please email us and a member of our team will get back to you.

  • Hi there, I have a 2006 BMW 1 Series and I have got both the brake light and traction light constantly on my dashboard in amber.. Do I need to have this abs module rebuilt? The computer shows as there being a pressure sensor fault.

    • Hi James

This is a very common fault and we now carry these units in stock on an exchange basis. This means you won’t need to send your unit in for repair, simply order our replacement part and send the old exchange part back to us. Alternatively we can offer a complete supply & fit service and still make it a fraction of the price you would expect to pay anywhere else!

  • My daughters Golf 1.6 FSI already had an AbS light on when it was involved in an accident where the front drivers suspension was replaced, the garage handling the repair gave her the car back for a few days with two lights on, the original ABS fault light and the ESS steering wheel icon, and at one point an ESP light came on and went off again.

The garage then took it back and charged her to repair the ABS fault, and the ESS fault , duringbwhichnInw told the steeringbwheel was removed and replaced.

The car was returned with NO lights, but within one week the ESP light has come on the dash and the button on the console is lit constantly showing ESP is off.

I have tried the re-calibration of the steering wheel angle sensor turning it right and left whilst the engine is on but not moving, then driving in Straight line, and switching off and I went through the ignition sequence again with no success, we still have the ESP light.

I am puzzled how the garage could give her the car back with no lights , and within a few days the ESP light would appear?

Thanks for any advice, particularly is it safe for her to drive.
    Jim

    • Hi Jim

With the ESP light on, the ABS should be functional however the traction control system will be de-activated. You would need to check the fault codes to determine where the problem is but it sounds like the common Brake Pressure Sensor. This part can fail at any given time without any warning symptoms so although it does look like a bit too much of a coincidence it happening within a few days of receiving the car back, it is completely possible that the part failed of natural causes due to the design fault.

We carry these parts in stock ready for a same-day dispatch because they’re so common and we sell on average 3-4 a day nationwide.

  • Hi,

I have an Audi A4 2.0 Tdi 170 avant with the ESP light on. The following codes come 00493 ESP sensor unit (G419) 004 – No Signal/ Communication.

The ABS light is not on

Do you think its the ABS module?

    Tom

    • Hi Tom

      Thank you for your enquiry,

The G419 ESP Sensor Unit is an external sensor which usually would be found fitted near the steering column. Ensure you have power going to this sensor as it may be a wiring fault but if wiring is okay, change the sensor and see if the fault will clear. When changing this sensor, you will need to perform adaptations using VAG-COM or equivelant. We offer a step-by-step tutorial on how to use VAG-COM to perform basic settings and adaptations for these sensors on our Sinspeed Forum but is only accessible for active forum users.

      I hope this helps.

    • Hi Rob

      Thank you for your enquiry,

No – this sounds like you have another issue on the vehicle. There are many sensors which work together and can all trigger this type of fault so it’s best to get it plugged in for a diagnostics and get the fault codes.

      • I had a similar fault with a Chevrolet Kalos.I.E engine fault warning light, it was also affecting the zircon system and putting the LPG low warning beep on, had new heat sensor for the LPG fitted but it did not change a thing. I never cottoned on that although there is no water leak, my Kalos needs topping up more often than one would normally expect. Although the temperature guage read normal, which is what stopped me following that track. After a long while it became evident that the problems were all connected insufficient water in the header tank. Lo , and behold, all of those problems were cleared up overnight !

    • Hi Stew

      Thanks for the enquiry,

No it won’t be the G201 fault. If replacing the sensor didn’t fix it then you either have a wiring fault or insufficient voltage supply going to the sensor. Worst case the ABS module is defective by not supplying the voltage but this is repairable with a Lifetime warranty.

    • Hello Mr Morrison

We can most definitely repair the fault and don’t believe it will be related to the Lambda Sensor fault. That fault can cause the engine light to come on but will not be related as to why the ABS / ESP lights are coming on. We would need to diagnose the vehicle first to get the correct fault codes so I would recommend giving us a call and maybe we can book you in for a diagnostic session first to determine the exact fault.

  • Hi, We dropped our VW Eos 2007 car off to the local garage on Friday morning for them to fit 2 new front tyres. On collection – the ABS and ESP lights in yellow came up. The mechanics said this morning that it is a ‘ well it can happen suddenly’ comment! I am rather suspicious – should I be – they have quoted a VW ABS repair kit for £200?
    Thanks
    Tim

    • Hello Tim

      Thanks for the enquiry,

If it is the brake pressure sensor fault (G201) then yes it can happen at any time and will not have been caused by the change of tyres. If it’s tyre pressure monitoring sensors or wheel speed sensors then this could be related to the changing of tyres and your fault code will tell you which side and which wheel is affected. Get the fault codes read and if it is a G201 pressure sensor fault then come back to us and we can quote you for the replacement part.

      Kind Regards

      Jason

      • Thank you for your advice . The car was transferred to an electronics diagnostic centre because after replacing the pump – the fault was still present. The whole problem was caused by the Pump only getting 6.3v input instead of 12v, this was a fusebox cover problem namely that a clip was resting on 2 fuses causing a short, one cause apparently could be the chassis flexing when tyres are changed. A design fault I say irrespective of the age of the vehicle but VW have said that what do you expect with a 7 year old car? It seems that my final bill will be nearer to £1,000 ! Just thought that others should be aware!

        • Hi Tim

I’m very sorry to hear of the troubles you’ve had and the response you received from VW. I guess it’s hard to prove it being a design fault if it is that but glad you’ve solved the root cause of the failure. This will certainly help our customers investigate their own ABS issues as well and hopefully save others a lot of time and money.

  • Hi, I have a vw Passat 1.9tdi 2004. The esp light occasionally flickers which causes the car to jolt a little whilst driving, then the light goes solid and the jolting stops, it seems to occur when there is excessive weight or movement by people sitting on the back seats. Also when I approach a junction at slow speed and apply the brakes, it appears like the wheels are locking up, no abs light comes on but has done in the past. I have had this problem for about a year .

    • Hello Saf

      Thanks for the enquiry,

I would first recommend checking for any stored / historical fault codes that might help identify where the fault is. If you get a code pointing to the Off-Side Rear wheel sensor then check the wheel speed sensor, ABS rings, wheel bearing and wiring for that sensor as the fault will most likely be there. If there are no codes stored then check all 4 wheels before suspecting the ABS pump.

      Kind Regards

The ESP has no effect when pressed. I haven’t had the cod read yet and wonder if it is the same Brake Pressure Sensor you have explained above. Can you please send me the price for fixing this. Thanks,

    • Hi Svetlin

      Thanks for the enquiry,

The Brake Pressure Sensor does not normally affect the braking pedal and does not normally make it go hard or soft. I would recommend having the codes read first.

      Kind Regards

  • 2001 VW Passat 1.8T SE – ABS light and brake warning light come on with warning 3 beeps on the alarm. Warning lights extinguish sometimes within 1 – 2 seconds and on occasion can remain on for 10 minutes. Have the following to DTC Nos. 01203 – Electrical connection between ABS and Instrument Cluster : open or Short to Ground; and 18014 Rough Road/ engine torque signal from ABS Electrical malfunction. Am I correct in thinking that this a fault with the ABS Pump Control module and that this may require a new unit or repair to the present unit. If it is repair then can you do this and at what cost!

    • Hi Chris

The Mk4 Golf should have an external sensor already. I’ve sent you an email with pricing for our solution and a bit more information about it but if you could kindly respond with the part numbers from your ABS pump I can check and confirm whether or not it has an internal sensor. If the sensor is external it would be much cheaper for you and we can supply them if needed.

    • Hi Leon

      Thank you for the question,

The ABS brakes will still be active but your ESP functionality will be disabled whilst the ESP light is on. Get booked in for a diagnostic session to have the trouble codes read. They should point you in the direction of the fault and it could end up being an inexpensive sensor.

      Kind Regards

There are some checks which must be performed on the vehicle first including a wiring continuity test from the Yaw Rate sensor to the ABS module. We have sent you an email with some further information and also some cost guidance if it does turn out to be an ABS Module failure.

How much for you to fit this fix? I live in Manchester could it be arranged for me to drive down and wait while it’s fixed.

    Thank you

    • Hi Lewis

      Thanks for your enquiry,

On most vehicles it can be done same day whilst you wait because we carry a lot of replacement units in stock, however on some models stock is not always available and therefore we would have to rebuild your existing unit which can take 3-5 working days. I’ve sent you an email, if you can reply to that with your vehicle details I can then advise and quote accordingly.
